No opening statement this week ... let's get right to it. Questions?
That position's been an interesting battle at times, Jason, but right now, I tend to agree Bryant's the superior option. Martavis is now well over his 2012 totals with 24 catches and 450 yards.
I find this interesting: in five games at home, Martavis Bryant has 11 catches for 210 yards and no touchdowns. But in three road games, Bryant's got 13 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns.
LB Stephone Anthony, the team's leading tackler, is a guy to keep an eye on. I don't think there's anyone else who's really ready.
Early guess on Clemson players getting drafted in 2014 (in kind of a particular order but not really): WR Sammy Watkins, DE Vic Beasley, QB Tajh Boyd, LT Brandon Thomas, RG Tyler Shatley, maaaaaaybe CB Darius Robinson. Catanzaro, Shuey, probably will get looks in NFL camps.
Boyd, Watkins, Beasley should be at the Combine. Maybe Thomas too.
But yeah, don't forget about Stephone Anthony. He might be a guy who heads out.
I think Stoudt's the (very) early leader in that race, because he's a good game manager right now and could quickly develop into something more with a full spring of first-team reps. Chad Kelly, provided he is healthy and 100 percent, could challenge him. Because Clemson does have two viable options, people really have got to slow their roll on DeShaun Watson starting in 2014. He's not even signed yet. It's true.
People pointing to Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston: stop. Just stop. Those guys redshirted. Had a full year in the weight room, full year in meetings rooms, full year in film room, full year on sidelines (Jameis credited his traveling last year to his maturity), full year in study hall, full year in dorms, full year to acclimate to being a college student. No offense to who I've heard is a great kid, but I give Watson a 3 percent chance of starting Opening Day. I'd allow for his chances to start later in the year. But not on Aug. 30, 2014 at Georgia. Rant over.
Oh, also John: don't forget, decent chances are Chad Morris is head coaching somewhere else next year. Gotta allow for that possibility too.
Take care, y'all. Have a great day
